Sumner Cemetery Gets BPW Funding
Senator Mike McKay recently announced that his efforts resulted in $45,000 being allotted by the Maryland Board of Public Works for improvements and signage at Sumner Cemetery in Cumberland. The cemetery is Allegany County’s first black cemetery, located off Yale Street in the city. The money will be used by the Cumberland Historic Cemetery Association to make improvements to the cemetery which was established in 1884 and includes the graves of six black Union Civil War soldiers.
