Superintendent Wants Career-Ready Grads

Kathy Cornwell

Driven by a generation of baby-boomers entering retirement and lower numbers of trade apprentices, the country is facing a shortage of skilled workers. That means those who have skills in carpentry, welding, plumbing and the like can demand higher rates of pay. Putting that idea to work is one focus of Allegany County Schools Superintendent Dr. Michael Martirano. He says parents should talk to their students to see whether college or a trade is in their future…

“We have students who are right now in our program at the Career Center who are being hired by people throughout the state because their skills are in so much need. Same thing with carpentry and plumbing. So, families need to have those discussions with their young people and value the importance of those jobs.”
