West Virginia Sports Transfers in High School Likely to Change

High school athletic transfers in the state of West Virginia could become much stricter next school year. House Bill 4425 passed the Senate Education Committee on Tuesday and would repeal a 2023 law that permitted a “one-time transfer” for high school athletes. Frankfort athletic director Jay Hesse testified in Charleston and said the current law had good intentions but has not worked. Locally Keyser and Frankfort High Schools have seen significant transfers in softball, basketball, and football. Hesse says the transfer rules have seen players complete basketball season at one school over the weekend and then join another high school Monday for spring sports. If the new bill becomes law, control of transfer rules will go back to the West Virginia Secondary Schools Activities Commission.
