CEDC To Begin Holding Public Meetings

September 6th, 2017 by WCBC Radio

In recent months the Cumberland Mayor and City Council has been receiving questions during the public business meetings about the operations and funding of the Cumberland Economic Development Corporation.  Perhaps in response, the CEDC recently announced that it will begin to hold public meetings.  Executive Director Paul Kelly said the meetings are largely to allow public comments, but he hopes to offer some updates on the group’s mission to implement the city’s strategic plan. The Cumberland Times News reports the public meetings were required after a ruling by the Maryland Open Meetings Compliance Board. The board concluded that the CEDC “falls within the statutory definition of a ‘public body’ for purposes of the Open Meetings Act and has violated the act by failing to comply with its provision.”   The question as to the CEDC’s status of private or public went before the board. The board ruled in November that the CEDC was not a private body.   The CEDC will conduct the meetings on the second Tuesday of each month beginning Sept. 12. The meetings will be at 1 p.m. at City Hall.
