Congressman Trone Reacts To Mill Closing

April 30th, 2019 by WCBC Radio

WCBC has reached out to several elected officials today for reaction to the announcement the Luke Mill is closing.

This from 6th District Congressman David Trone:

“My heart breaks for the hardworking employees and their families of the Luke Paper Mill. My team and I are reaching out to all state, local, and federal officials, the mill, and the unions to offer our immediate assistance. We are concentrating on providing support and resources to impacted employees, holding the company’s feet to the fire to ensure employees are treated fairly during this process, and addressing the issue of drinking water and sewage treatment for the town of Luke, as the town currently receives water and sewer services from the mill. In addition, I have instructed my team to be as helpful as possible to these hardworking families. We also created a website to keep impacted employees updated on how we can help at trone.house.gov.”

Brian, I’m not sure why you would place blame on a political party. The fact is, paper is a dying industry. Rumors have been out there for at least 10 years that the Luke facility would eventually close. Although it is sad and devastating it is not surprising. The plant has changed hands at least 4 times in the last 20 years so the writing has been on the wall. It’s kinda like the coal industry. As much as some people tout the re-birth of coal, it is a lost cause. There are 50K coal mining jobs in the country. The wind and solar industries employ 3 million. Capitalism through technological advances will take it’s toll on the old economy sooner or later.
