Cumberland Man Charged With Attempted Murder, Numerous Other Charges

On Thursday, May 26, 2016, at 6:49 AM, the Cumberland Police responded to a private residence on Baltimore Avenue for a reported breaking and entering. When Officers arrived they learned that a 28 year old female victim had been awakened by a constant knocking at the door. When the female victim opened the door to look she observed a male suspect who was wearing a mask. The suspect produced a handgun and forced his way into the residence.

            When the female victim screamed, it woke her 26 year old husband. When the male victim walked into the living room he observed the suspect with a handgun in his hand. The male victim then struck the suspect twice in the face. After continued altercation, the victim was able to push the suspect down a flight of stairs before returning to his residence and calling 911.

            When the police arrived, the suspect had already fled the scene. The suspect was described as a black male with a large build. The male victim indicated that the suspect should be suffering from facial injuries as a result of the struggle.

            A search of the immediate area was conducted, but the suspect was not located. Law enforcement contacted the Western Maryland Health System Regional Medical Center to alert them to the fact that the suspect may respond to the hospital for treatment of his injuries.

            A short time later the emergency room contacted the Cumberland Police to report that a subject had just checked into the hospital, suffering from facial injuries. The Cumberland Police responded and requested the assistance of the Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigation Unit (C3I).

            C3I Investigators responded to the hospital where they conducted several interviews that helped develop a suspect. The scene was processed by an Evidence Collection Technician with the Maryland State Police Forensic Sciences Division, and several items of evidence were recovered.

            Based on the evidence recovered from the scene and the information developed through interviews, Investigators obtained an arrest warrant for the suspect, 29 year old Marcus Vaughn, of Cumberland. Vaughn was charged with Attempted 1st Degree Murder, Attempted 2nd Degree Murder, 1st Degree Assault, 2nd Degree Assault, Armed Robbery, 1st Degree Burglary and numerous related charges.

 

            Vaughn was taken before a District Court Commissioner fort an initial appearance, and is currently being held at the Allegany County Detention Center without bond, pending his next court appearance,

 

            The investigation is continuing by the Cumberland Police and C3I.
