Edwards Keynote Speaker of Bestpitch-Workers Memorial Day

Workers’ Memorial Day honors workers who died on the job or as a result of exposure to hazards in the workplace and is meant to acknowledge the loss experienced by their families and communities. Locally, a ceremony is held each year outside of Cumberland’s City Hall. Bureau of Labor Statistics data show that an average of 12 workers die each day in the U.S. from injuries sustained at work. In 2012, private employers reported nearly 3 million injuries and illnesses to workers and state and local governments reported 793,000 injuries.  In Cumberland the event is now known as “Jim Bestbitch- Workers Memorial Day” in honor of the longtime local union representative who passed away two years ago.
