Efforts Continue To Address Issues With WMSR

January 29th, 2020 by WCBC Radio

An operational audit released last August on the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad cited numerous problems with the attraction that could force its closure if not remedied.  The report’s conclusion said, “There are a number of significant issues confronting the railroad on an operational level, several of which have the ability to impact ongoing operations to the point that the railroad would actually close.” At the time, county officials called the report “sobering” and pledged to work with railroad management to solve the problems. Allegany County Commissioners President Jake Shade tells WCBC News that the holiday season produced some strong ridership numbers for the tourist train- and efforts are continuing by all parties to address the myriad of issues identified in the audit report…

Why isn’t the Board of the WMSR being replaced or called out for poor oversight? “Problems” at the scenic railroad are no longer a surprise. They are an expectation.

Things have not gone well the last few years but at least we got rid of that general manager that wasn’t from around here. Darn smart alec coming here, being clever, telling us how to run our railroad. We won’t need no railroad when someone gives us money for a river park.
