Maryland recorded 47,801 new unemployment filings last week. State officials says that is an increase from 41,941 the week before, but lower than the 53,464 new filings in the week ending June 6.  288 of those claims were from Allegany County residents. For the week ending May 30, 43,095 claims were filed overall, the week ending May 23, 48,963 claims, 51,108 claims the week ending on May 16, for the week of May 9, 65,805 filed claims and 109,263 claims the week ending May 2. Most of the new filings are in the jurisdictions hardest-hit by the coronavirus: Baltimore City and Baltimore, Montgomery and Prince George's counties. Labor Secretary Tiffany Robinson told lawmakers Wednesday her department was working to clear a backlog of more than 34,000 pending unemployment claims.
