MSP Launches “Move Over March”

February 29th, 2016 by WCBC Radio

The Maryland State Police Western Region from Frederick to Garrett County will be conducting “Move Over March” safety initiative.  The goal is to save lives by educating drivers; the law requires drivers approaching from the rear of an emergency vehicle using visual signals while stopped on the highway to, if possible, ‘make a lane change into an available lane immediately adjacent to the emergency vehicle.  The movement should only be done if there is an available lane and it can be done safely.  If it is not possible to move over, the law requires drivers to ‘slow to a reasonable and prudent speed that is safe for existing weather, road and vehicular or pedestrian traffic conditions.

Drivers must make reasonable accommodations for those emergency workers, fire and EMS, state highway, tow truck operators, and law enforcement officers, who are out there risking their lives to take care of motorists and open roads. It should be an automatic response for drivers who see emergency lights to slow down and move over.
