Orioles to play Yankees in Baltimore Wednesday, Thursday

July 28th, 2020 by WCBC Radio

The Baltimore Orioles, set to face the Miami Marlins in Miami before they flew home to face the coronavirus-depleted squad in Baltimore, will instead play the New York Yankees at Camden Yards on Wednesday and Thursday. The Marlins schedule, which also included a home series against Washington, has been postponed through Sunday, Major League Baseball said in a statement. Fifteen Marlins players have tested positive for the coronavirus.

In addition, the remainder of the home-and-home series between the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Yankees has been postponed. Additional rescheduling during the week of Aug. 3 will be announced later this week, MLB officials said.

Though the news of the Marlins' coronavirus tests has raised questions about the sustainability of the 60-game MLB season, officials insisted their health and safety protocols "were designed with a challenging circumstance like the one facing the Marlins in mind."

"The Marlins’ personnel who tested positive remain in isolation and are receiving care," MLB officials said.

In the more than 6,400 tests conducted since Friday, there have been no new positive tests of on-field personnel from any of the other 29 clubs.

"The difficult circumstances of one Club reinforce the vital need to be diligent with the protocols in all ways, both on and off the field," the league said. "We will continue to bolster our protocols and make any necessary adjustments. The realities of the virus still loom large, and we must operate with that in mind every day."
