Democrat Penny Walker, running against incumbent Jason Buckel for the Maryland House 1B seat, picked up a key endorsement this week from AFSCME Local 898 which represents correctional officers. AFSCEM 898 was in the news last week, when it’s president Jeff Grabenstein said that the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS) has not done enough to keep officers and staff safe- and that the facilities need to be in lockdown to allow correctional officers proper training on how to deal with a potential drug outbreak and improve the mail screening procedures. Two workers at the Western Correctional Institution were sent to the hospital last week after being potentially exposed to a letter soaked in an unknown substance.
