Students from Allegany High School’s SkillsUSA chapter, now in its second year, are preparing to compete in the Maryland State competition in Westminster in April. Allegany High School is the only comprehensive high school in Maryland’s Region 6 (Allegany, Frederick, Garrett and Washington Counties) to be part of SkillsUSA. The high school’s Biomedical Science program qualifies it to be in SkillsUSA because it is a Career and Technical Education (CTE) program.
The chapter, which student Mason LaRue founded in October 2024, sent 19 students and two advisors to a leadership conference in Ocean City this fall.
SkillsUSA is a student organization focused on personal, workplace and technical skills. The Allegany chapter’s officers are LaRue, president; Paige Yommer, vice president; Nathaniel Hockman, treasurer; Leigha Read, secretary; and Noah Marker, historian. Advisors are Florence Saku and Tammy Twigg. SkillsUSA connects students, teachers and industry professionals to develop workforce skills through competitions and hands-on learning. Last year, Allegany High School students competed at both regional and state levels.
