U.S. Navy Chaplain Dies in Cumberland

A longtime priest who grew up in Ridgeley has died. Monsignor Patrick Fryer, 85, died May 23 at Country House in Cumberland. Monsignor Fryer grew up in Ridgeley and graduated from Ridgeley High School in 1959. He was ordained a priest by Bishop James Edward Walsh in 1973 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Cumberland. Monsignor Fryer was a captain in the United States Navy Chaplain Corps. Visitation will be Monday, June 1, at St. Patrick’s from 4 to 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, June 2 at 1 p.m. Interment will be in Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery with military honors.
