Local Volunteers Participate in National Emergency Exercise

Members of the Mountain Amateur Radio Club are participating in a national emergency communications exercise this weekend in LaVale. Amateur Radio Field Day is a 24-hour event sponsored by the Amateur Radio Relay League were ham radio operators from across North America establish temporary radio stations in public locations to demonstrate their skill and service. Amateur radio signals reach beyond cellular towers, internet connectivity and political borders to bring people together while providing essential communication to communities. Chris Clites, president of Mountain Amateur Radio Club says it can be more than just a hobby…
“Not only local hobby club but that we continue to provide emergency communications response to the community when needed. If say for instance a tornado or a national disaster or something happens in Western Maryland, we’re able to provide communications to the local government.”
Field Day is held at the Lions pavilion located at 599 Georges Creek Blvd. in LaVale. The event is open to the public and begins at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 27th and we’ll run for 24 hours.
