Each year, area non-profits are invited to apply for a portion of the city’s hotel/motel tax income. A strict policy on what is needed in the application and a deadline do most of the work in narrowing down candidates, but the mayor and council make the final funding decisions. Mayor Ray Morriss tells WCBC the process is pretty simple…

“The five us we take the budget and we look at what the request is, we look at the paperwork behind what they’ve applied for and we individually decide how much we believe they should get and then we fill out an excel spreadsheet and after all five of us have made our submissions, you average it out.”
