Comptroller Wants Ratepayer Pay-Back

Comptroller Brooke Lierman is calling on Maryland’s electric utilities to provide credits to customers, following a decision by the Supreme Court of Maryland in Comptroller of Maryland v. The Potomac Edison Company. The court determined that certain equipment used by electric utilities qualifies for Maryland’s sales and use tax exemption Lierman said the state will issue refunds to energy companies, but urged the companies to pass that $250 million back to ratepayers…

“This money that is a refund of taxes paid and interest paid on those taxes, belongs to ratepayers. I call on the energy companies to do the right thing and act quickly once they receive their refund, to issue credits to all ratepayers.’
