ATTEMPTED MURDER ARREST

On Saturday, October 28, 2023 at approximately 9:37 AM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department and the Cumberland Fire Department responded to a residence in the 300 block of Pennsylvania Avenue for a possible stab wound victim.  Officers arrived and observed the victim sitting on the floor with a stab wound.  Officers rendered aid to the victim until the Cumberland Fire Department arrived and took over care.  The victim reported that the suspect that stabbed him was at a residence in the 400 block of Race Street.  The victim stated that the suspect had also assaulted another person at the same location.  The victims were transported to UPMC Western Maryland for treatment of their injuries.  Officers located the suspect at the Race Street residence and identified him as David Daughton.  Daughton was detained at this time.  After further investigation, Daughton was placed under arrest and searched.  Daughton was found to be in possession of suspected crack cocaine and CDS paraphernalia.  Possible evidence related to the crime was also recovered.    Daughton was transported to Central Booking.  He was later seen by a District Court Commissioner and remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center without bond.

On 10/14/13 at approximately 1000 hrs, troopers from the Maryland State Police, Cumberland Barrack responded to the Thomas B. Finan Center located at 10102 Country Club Rd, Cumberland, Maryland for a report of a stabbing.

Upon arrival, troopers were confronted with a combative suspect who was identified as Craig Harris Zello, 50 yr old, male, of Hagerstown, Maryland. After restraining Zello, troopers assisted medical staff with tending to the victim.

The victim was summoned to assist medical staff at the Finan Center with a combative patient (Zello). While trying to restrain Zillow, the victim was struck in the back of the head with a 7 inch galvanized spike, which was still lodged in his head. The victim was transported to Western Maryland Regional Medical Center for serious injuries.

Zello was also transported to the WMRMC and for evaluation. After evaluation, Zello was transported to the Cumberland Barrack, processed, and charged for several criminal violations including: Attempted First and Second Degree Murder, First and Second Degree Assault, Reckless Endangerment, and weapons violations. Zello was then taken before a District Court Commissioner for a bond hearing and held without bond. Troopers were assisted by the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office and the Cumberland City Fire Department.
