City Man Arrested on Assault Charges

On Saturday, the Cumberland City Police Department responded to a residence in the 200 block of Springdale St for the report of an assault. Once on scene, Officers contacted a female victim who advised she had been assaulted by Shawn Steven Hamlette, 24, of Cumberland MD. She further advised that she and Hamlette had been involved in a verbal altercation that turned physical. She alleged that Hamlette struck her in the head multiple times with a glass bottle before fleeing the scene on foot. Officers searched the area and were able to locate Hamlette. He was taken into custody without further incident.  Hamlette was taken to the Allegany County Central Booking where he is awaiting his Initial Appearance.

On Friday, rhe Cumberland City Police responded to a residence in the 400 block of Columbia St for a reported assault. Upon arrival, officers contacted a female victim. They advised that they had gotten into an argument in the residence with a male family member. The argument escalated and the victim advised they were assaulted by the male suspect. The male suspect was identified as Michael Eric Smith, 30, of Cumberland MD. Throughout the investigation, Smith was disruptive with officers on scene creating disturbances which drew the attention of other subjects in the area. As a result, Smith was placed under arrest.  He was taken before the District Court Commissioner for his Initial Appearance where he was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center on a $2500 bond.

Charges:  Assault 2nd Degree, Disorderly Conduct
