Cumberland Gas Prices Hold Steady

July 10th, 2021 by WCBC Radio

Following the July Fourth holiday weekend, the Maryland statewide gas average, as well as the averages in most regions of the state, have not moved. In its latest weekly report, new data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA) showed gas demand jumped last week. The estimated rate, which will likely be revised in a few months after verified data is available, is the highest weekly gas demand estimate released by EIA since 1991 and only reflects one day of the Independence Day holiday weekend.

The national gas price average has increased 40% since the start of the year, from $2.25 on January 1 to $3.14 today (up respectively two cents from one week ago, eight cents from one month ago and 96 cents from one year ago). Higher demand and a decline in total gas stocks last week continue to push prices. If these trends continue, while the price of crude remains above $70 per barrel, American drivers can expect gas prices to continue climbing during the busy summer driving season. Motorists can expect gas prices to increase another 10–20 cents through the end of August, bringing the national average well over $3.25 this summer.

Maryland’s average is $2.99, unchanged from last week, down two cents from a month ago and 79 cents more than last year. All areas in Maryland are averaging under $3 this week with the exception of some Maryland localities on the edge of the nation’s capital.

In the last week, Maryland gas prices averages have seen both increases and decreases. The statewide average is down week-over-week, as are the local gas price averages in Annapolis, Baltimore, Frederick, Salisbury and the Washington suburbs. However, the average in Cumberland remained even with last week and Hagerstown saw a penny increase.

Since last Friday, the national average for a gallon of regular gasoline has increased by three cents. In its latest weekly report, new data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA) showed that gas demand dropped while total domestic gas stocks increased. Typically, lower gas demand amid growing stocks would help push pump prices down, but the increasing price of crude has pushed prices up instead.

Today’s national gas price average is $3.07, up respectively three cents from one week ago, nine cents from one month ago and 99 cents from one year ago.

The gas price average in Maryland today is $2.99, down two cents from last week, up respectively seven cents in the last month, and 89 cents from this date last year.

This is the first day with a statewide average under $3 since Maryland’s statewide average hit $3.01 on May 13. All areas in Maryland are averaging under $3 this week with the exception of the areas closest to Washington, D.C.
