CUMBERLAND POLICE DEPARTMENT PRESS RELEASE

On June 30, 2024, at 1:44 AM, the Cumberland Police Department and Cumberland Fire Department responded to a report of an injured woman in the area of West Oldtown Road. Upon investigation, it was discovered that the victim, 38-year-old Celina Smith of Cumberland, had been shot.

Investigators believe that Ms. Smith encountered a person at approximately 1:15 AM near the intersection of West Oldtown Road and Glenwood Street. During this encounter, the individual produced a weapon and shot her before walking away towards Glenwood Street.

Subsequent investigation by the Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigation Unit and the Cumberland Police involved interviewing numerous witnesses, gathering evidence, and executing search warrants throughout the area. 

As a result of the investigation, information was gathered identifying Kaleb Jas York, age 18, of Cumberland as a suspect in this matter. On July 9, 2024, Kaleb York was arrested and charged with attempted murder, felony assault, and reckless endangerment in connection with this case.  Kaleb York is currently being held in the Allegany County Detention Center without bond. 

At the time of this press release the victim, Cecilia Smith, is alive but in dire condition at UPMC, Pittsburgh.

On 02/15/24 at 1418hrs the Emergency Operations Center received a call in reference to shots fired in the area of Bishop Walsh High School. As a result officers from the Cumberland Police Department, Allegany County Sheriff's Office, and Maryland State Police responded to the area. Upon arrival everything was found to be normal with no shoots being fired or observed from this area. Officers conducted safety checks of both Bishop Walsh and Allegany High School with nothing out of the ordinary being observed. Both schools remained in a normal operating procedure.
