On Thursday, October 2, 2025, Officers of the Cumberland Police Department responded to the area of Frederick Street and Queen City Drive for the report of a stabbing. Simultaneously, a male came into Police Headquarters reporting that he was almost struck by a vehicle in the same area. On the scene of the incident, it was learned that the male who entered Police Headquarters, Justin Blackburn, was identified as the suspect in the assault. The investigation concluded that Blackburn was involved in an argument with a driver turning from the street. During the argument, Blackburn produced a knife and stabbed the victim. Blackburn was arrested a search of his person yielded multiple bladed weapons. He was transported to the Allegany County Detention Center, where he was held without bond pending his trial.

CHARGES: Assault First Degree, Assault Second Degree, Reckless Endangerment, Disorderly Conduct.

On Monday, October 28th, 2024, the Cumberland Police Department responded to the parklet at N. Centre St and Frederick St for the report of an assault. Upon arrival, officers located a male victim with facial injuries, requiring medical attention. The victim advised he had been involved in an argument with a “Jerry” subject over money. He stated “Jerry” then became enraged and struck in the face with a flail-type weapon. The victim advised the suspect then dropped the weapon and fled the area. The victim was transported by ambulance for further medical treatment. Officers then located the weapon used, which was found to be a rock placed inside a sock. A short time later, officers located a male matching “Jerry’s” description. The male, identified as Gerald Michael Sassano, 59, of Cumberland MD, advised he had been involved in an altercation with the victim. As a result, Sassano was placed under arrest and transported to Central Booking. Sassano was taken before a District Court Commissioner for an Initial Appearance where he was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center. He Is currently being held on $2,500 bond.
