Gas Prices on the Rise

July 31st, 2021 by WCBC Radio

Most Maryland drivers saw a week of increases at the pump with the exception of Hagerstown. Maryland’s average is $3.09, up respectively six cents from last week, nine cents from a month ago and 81 cents more than last year.

In its latest weekly report, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported that gas demand increased slightly last week while total domestic gas stocks declined. These trends have helped to stabilize price increases in some areas of the country; however, crude oil prices continue to remain above $70 per barrel. As crude prices remain high, AAA expects the national average to remain above $3 per gallon throughout the summer.

Today’s national gas price average is $3.16, up respectively a penny from one week ago, five cents from one month ago and 97 cents from one year ago.

Gas prices across Maryland continued to increase this week, but at a slower pace than the week before. On Wednesday, Maryland’s statewide gas price average was for the first time even with the previous year’s average since the start of the pandemic. The statewide average has been a penny higher than the previous year’s average since Thursday.

Price increases have been seen nationwide over the last few weeks. The last time the nation saw a substantial January pump price increase was in 2009. That year, the national gas price average jumped 23 cents inside of the first three weeks of the year. At that time U.S. gasoline demand and supply were lower and crude oil prices had been increasing, similar to today.

The gas price average in Maryland today is $2.47, up respectively two cents from last week, 12 cents in the last month, and one cent from this date last year.

Today’s national gas price average is $2.39, up respectively two cents in the last week, 16 cents in the last month, and down 15 cents from this time last year.
