Monument Dedication Saturday for City Policeman Killed in 1907

A monument dedication will take place today for the only Cumberland Police officer ever killed in the line of duty. According to media reports from the time, Patrolman August Baker was shot Oct. 3, 1907, while attempting to make an arrest. He died from his wounds two days later and was buried at Greenmount Cemetery on Shades Lane on Oct. 7, 1907. The effort to place a monument on Baker’s grave site has been led by volunteers with the Cumberland Historic Cemetery Organization. Ed Taylor Jr is president of the organization.
