The Superintendent of Allegany County Public School, Dr. Michael Martirano, has released the following letter:

Greetings.

I want to thank our entire school system community for your support and cooperation as we made the prudent and proactive decision to close schools on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, for inclement weather and flooding conditions.  As your superintendent, I will always make decisions that keep our students and staff safe and protected.

Additionally, our school system is under the requirements of the Maryland Education Article § 7-103, which dictates the mandatory length of the school year for public schools. It requires schools to be open for at least 180 days.

Today, with the support of the Allegany County Board of Education, I have submitted a written letter to the Maryland State Superintendent of Schools requesting a waiver for the lost instructional day on Wednesday, May 27, 2026. This matter will be decided by the Maryland State Board of Education at their regular monthly meeting on Thursday, May 28, 2026. If this decision is approved, the last instructional day for Allegany County Public Schools will remain Wednesday, June 10, 2026.

Once I receive a decision from the Maryland State Board of Education, I will officially communicate the information to our entire educational community.

Again, thank you for your support and understanding.
