Bill Passed To Prevent Privatization of Detention Centers

Kathy Cornwell

One of the concerns that has crossed the minds of those against the construction of a detention center in Williamsport is whether it could become privatized. “As long as it is run by the federal government, the State of Maryland really doesn’t have a problem with that. We did pass a law that said we would not have any private detention centers. Maryland has never had a private detention center, jail or correctional facility. That bill did pass the Senate, it was sent over to the House and I think it’s going to be passed over there as well.”
