City Fire Department Holding 9/11 Memorial Service
Cumberland’s Fire Department is holding a special public memorial service Friday at 8:30am for the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. In addition to what happened nationally that day, Chief Steve Grogg says the department is also remembering a local miracle that occurred…
“Bill Beeghly, who was a captain at the time was teaching a CPR class to other city employees and one of the city employees went into full arrest while he was in CPR class. Bill and the other people brought him back to life and he’s still alive today and both of them are going to be recognized in our service on Friday.”
Grogg said the fire department was very aware of how close danger came to Cumberland 25 years ago…
“We had reports of the plane that crashed in Shanksville – the flight path takes them right over Cumberland. And we had got word that there was a plane flying over possibly heading toward D.C. That was the only thing with 9/11 that concerned us at all. The thing that gets me is we’re only 37 air miles from Shanksville, so it would take no time for that plane to be over top of Cumberland.”
