Governor Testifies On Predatory Pricing Bill

Shoppers across the country are noticing the change from paper price stickers on shelves to digital labels. This shift may make it easier for grocery stores to make price changes, but it also makes it easier to change prices at will. Governor Wes Moore has the Protection from Predatory Pricing Act to keep that from happening. He says innovation should serve consumers, not manipulate…
“Technology should be used to support Maryland families. And we’re seeing how in the case of this, where specific algorithms and people’s data can be used, actually, to work against them.”
Moore said his bill does two things to protect shoppers from abrupt price changes…
“It requires grocery stores to keep prices fixed for at least one business day. So no more paying different prices for the same item for two different people on the same day. The second – it prohibits the use of personal data and automated systems to individualize prices.”
