Local Horseracing Recalled

Fairgo Horse Track at Cumberland Fairgrounds
Kathy Cornwell

The State of Maryland  recently acquired the intellectual property rights to horseracing’s Preakness and Black Eyed Susan stakes, keeping one of the jewels of the Triple Crown in Maryland. The event brought to mind the race years of the Cumberland Fairgrounds that lasted until 1961, according to local historian Al Feldstein…

“It had some of the best horse races in the country when they built the fairgrounds out in Fairgo, I think 1924, they started horseracing out there. It was a half-mile track. There was a clubhouse, a grandstand that’s still there, the clubhouse, the jockey house, paddock.”
