The State of Maryland acted quickly to match the bid of Churchill Downs, retaining the rights to the Preakness Stakes, one of the jewels of horseracing’s Triple Crown.  The state matched the $85 million bid for the Preakness and Black Eyed Susan stakes, keeping the annual horse race in Maryland, which has run in the state since 1873. Governor Wes Moore told reporters the money will come from the sale of bonds…

“An industry that is tens of thousands of people, something that is the crown jewel of the Triple Crown. I was proud of the fact that we are going to hold on to the IP. I’m proud of the fact that it cost the taxpayers nothing to do it, and I’m really thankful for the deal that we negotiated and we’re looking forward to a successful Preakness for years and years to come.”
