Speaker Open To Special Session On Redistricting

While she said she would not call the session herself, Maryland House Speaker Joseline Pena-Melnyk is open to a special legislative session being called to address redistricting. The move to draw new congressional maps failed in the General Assembly this past session, but another call for Maryland to do the same has come from some state lawmakers. Those in favor of a special session are citing the recent Supreme Court decision that negated parts of the 1965 Voting Rights Act that allowed redrawing to encourage black voting.
