Dr. Wendy Main who heads up Special Education and Student Services for Allegany County’s schools, delivered a status report to school board members. County schools currently have over 1500 special education students, with 50% in elementary grades. Dr. Main says they are almost fully staffed, but there is a particular need for Speech Pathologists. School Superintendent Dr. Michael Martirano commended Main’s leadership…

“What Dr. Main has said regarding the staffing, where we are at this time, is incumbent upon the work which is being done in our special education department. The recruitment, the retention, the additional training. The contract pieces we’ve negotiated for our IA’s, a number of things – we’re very proud of the work.”
