UPDATED: Accident With Entrapment Reported near Cresaptown: Patient Serious

6:40 PM UPDATE:

One patient was transported from the scene of a two-vehicle crash on McMullen Highway in the area of Scarpelli Funeral Home, Thursday evening, according to emergency service officials. 
 
"The Allegany County Joint Communications Center began taking calls at 3:40 p.m. reporting a serious crash in the area of Scarpelli Funeral Home," Lt. Todd Bowman, public information officer for the Allegany County Department of Emergency Services said. "North and southbound lanes of McMullen Highway were closed as crews worked to extricate one of the drivers."
 
First arriving units confirmed with the Communications Center, two vehicles struck head-on with one occupant, an approximately 60-year-old male entrapped in the vehicle. 
 
"The medic unit from Cresaptown arrived on the scene and requested aviation," Bowman said. "Our Joint Communications Center worked with SYSCOM to dispatch a Maryland State Police Aviation helicopter."
 
Extrication of the patient took approximately 25 minutes due to heavy front end damage, according to Bowman. 
 
Units from Cresaptown, Rawlings, LaVale and Allegany County Department of Emergency Services responded to the 3:42 p.m. incident. 
 
The patient was flown to Conemaugh Health System in Johnstown, Pa. by MSP-Aviation. 
 
Maryland State Police is investigating. 
 
No other injuries were reported in this crash, Bowman said. The roadway remained closed for a short time as crews worked to remove the vehicles and clear debris.

INITIAL REPORT:

Allegany County 911 has dispatched police, fire and EMS units to the Cresaptown area for a motor vehicle accident with entrapment which occurred on McMullen Highway near Scarpelli Funeral Home.

Eyewitnesses tell WCBC News that it appears vehicles are being clearned near Weis Market for a possible landing of Trooper Five for medical transport.

Traffic in the area is being detoured.
