The Allegany County Board of Education is weighing a number of budget recommendations made by staff earlier this week- and many of those impact programs, students and personnel. With funding below optimum levels and a declining reserve fund, the Board met Tuesday earlier this week to discuss proposed $3.4 million in widespread cost-cutting measures. One of the more controversial proposals calls for a student participation fee in athletics- a $25 fee per sport to offset rising transportation costs. Board member Ed Root said he has some concerns with that plan- and it could prove too much of financial burden for some parents, particularly those with kids who play multiple sports.
