Herbicide to be Applied in Flood Control Area

August 31st, 2011 by WCBC Radio

Beginning on August 31, 2011 and continuing over the next several days Utilities Forestry Services of Clearville, Pennsylvania will be applying an herbicide treatment to woody brush and unwanted vegetation along the Flood Control Project in Cumberland and Ridgeley. The areas are along the C&O Canal towpath and along the East and West Levees in Ridgeley.

The treatment is required by the Army Corps of Engineers to clear all plant growth along the rip rap portions of the flood control levees. The plant and brush growth are a dangerous condition to the levees. During a flood the plant growth may be ripped from the levees and displace the rip rap and create an erosion or it can weaken the levee systems.  The treatment is an approved water base type that only affects the plants through their root system and all precautions will be taken to protect individuals and properties from over spraying.
