August 10th, 2018 by WCBC Radio

WBAL reports two candidates running for Governor of Maryland are speaking out against white supremacist demonstrations planned for this weekend.

In a statement released Friday morning, Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan condemned the planned demonstrations as an "invasion of vile and perverted ideology."

The governor's statement follows in its entirety:

"Hate has no place in our society, and these white supremacists and the racism and bigotry they spew are not welcome in our state — today, this weekend, or ever. As we face this invasion of vile and perverted ideology infesting our region, we stand united in our conviction that a diverse and inclusive Maryland is a stronger Maryland.

"In Maryland, people of all backgrounds and beliefs can make a home, and this diversity is celebrated throughout our state. That will never change as long as I am governor.

"We stand ready to provide any needed assistance to our regional partners as they prepare to deal with the ramifications of these despicable rallies. I have directed agencies, including the Maryland State Police, Maryland Emergency Management Agency, and the Governor's Office of Homeland Security, to coordinate efforts with their D.C. and Virginia counterparts to ensure the safety of all of our citizens."

From the Democratic side, candidate Ben Jealous also released a statement speaking the against the rallies planned.

The full statement reads as follows:

Silver Spring, MD – TODAY, Friday, August 10, 2018, Ben Jealous, former National President & CEO of the NAACP released the following statement in advance of the white supremacist, "Unite the Right" rally in Washington D.C. this weekend on the anniversary of the rally which left one woman dead and almost twenty injured last year in Charlottesville, Virginia.

“As racist white supremacist prepare to descend on Maryland's doorstep this weekend, we must remember it takes incredible courage to love one another in the face of hate and bigotry," said Jealous. "The voices of love and peace will drown out those who want to keep our country divided and spew hate. From the abolitionist work of Marylanders like Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman, Maryland has always been a state of courageous leaders fighting to push our nation forward. Now is the time for us to summon the same courage and stand up against hate, so that we leave our children a future where the racist beliefs of white supremacist are no more."

I have much greater faith in the people of Maryland to stand for diversity, inclusion, and progress than I do in those who seek to keep us divided. This weekend, while white supremacists march in Washington, here in Maryland let's continue to stand for the values that have made our country great."

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam and the city of Charlottesville on Wednesday declared a state of emergency ahead of the one-year anniversary of a violent white nationalist rally that left one person dead and dozens of others injured.
