New Bids for Allegany School Construction Will be Opened Today

Today is the day of reckoning for the Allegany County Board of Education- at least when it comes to plans to construct a new Allegany High School. The second round of a bidding process that began last summer culminates this afternoon when bids are opened and the cost figures are announced publicly. The first bid ended in disaster for the board when they were opened in early September as the bids exceeded the estimated budget by about $20 million dollars. Since that time the board took action to rescind the earlier budget package; submitted  a second plan to the state and has had it approved for consideration; and worked with project engineers to reduce the cost of the project through “value engineering”. Allegany County School Superintendent Dr David Cox tells WCBC News that the cost of new school construction has skyrocketed in the past few years- making it difficult for school systems to put together a capital budget proposal for any project, let alone a new high school…
