Oakland man pleads guilty to child, sex offenses

April 22nd, 2016 by WCBC Radio

An Oakland man pleaded guilty recently in Garrett County Circuit Court to sexual solicitation of a minor, soliciting for child pornography and third-degree sexual offense.

The Cumberland Times News reports related charges were dismissed against Grayson Craig Shomo, 23, upon the plea. Shomo’s bond was revoked by Judge Ray Strubin and a pre-sentence investigation was ordered, according to State's Attorney Lisa Thayer Welch.

In July, investigators with the Garrett County Sheriff’s Office executed a search and seizure warrant and seized various electronic devices from Shomo’s residence. During subsequent forensic examinations, it was discovered that Shomo had communicated with a number of underage females in the Oakland area, leading to further investigation and charges being brought in October and November.

The first charge to which Shomo pleaded guilty involved a series of text messages between Shomo and a 13-year-old in which he solicited her to perform various sexual acts. In the second case, Shomo requested an underage female to send to him a video of her engaging in sexual activity. In the final case, Shomo had inappropriate sexual contact with an underage female.

Also in Circuit Court, an Oakland man pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute cocaine. Related possession charges against Jeremy Ray Guthrie, 29, were dismissed upon his plea.

Strubin revoked Guthrie’s bond and ordered a pre-sentence investigation, Welch said.

Guthrie was arrested by investigators with the Garrett County Narcotics Task Force in August. He was indicted by a grand jury in September.
