Governor Martin O'Malley's proposal to increase the minimum wage in Maryland remains before the Senate Finance Committee. The House of Delegates has already approved a bill to increase the minimum wage from $7.25 to $10.10 an hour by January, 2017, as the governor requested. Senate Finance Committee Chairman Mac Middleton wants a minimum wage bill to also address an increase in what the state pays personal care aides from non-profit organizations who work with the severely disabled. Middleton said that negotiations continue with aides to the governor to resolve the issue. He hopes the issue is resolved this week. There has been no shortage of support for the state initiative coming from Washington with Senator Barbara Mikulski and Congressmen Elijah Cummings and John Delaney all speaking out in support of the increase. Delaney, a democrat who represents western Maryland, says he hopes to see the leadership in the state senate bring the legislation to fruition.
