It’s a nationwide epidemic that appears to be getting worse in Maryland. Overdose deaths continue to climb, according to a new report from state officials.
Through the first six months of this year compared to the same time period last year, the total number of drug- and alcohol-related deaths in Maryland jumped by more than 300, and it’s only the beginning of the findings. New numbers from the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene show the total number of drug and alcohol-related deaths is on the rise statewide. In the first half of this year, 566 people suffered a heroin-related death, up from 230 during the same time period in 2015. Fentanyl-related deaths are surging. Through June of 2015 it was 121. This year, it’s up nearly four times that amount to 446 deaths.
