A panel of Maryland lawmakers decided this week to keep a statewide increase in the minimum wage from $7.25 an hour to $10.10 an hour over three years, rather than allow smaller counties, such as the ones in our area, with a lower cost of living to have less of a wage hike. The House Economic Matters Committee rejected a proposed change that rejected a proposed change that would have created a two-tiered minimum wage. Officials of Raise Maryland, the labor coalition that is lobbying for the govneror's bill, say they are disappointed at some of the changes. Matt Hanson, the campaign’s director, says without indexing future increases in the minimum wage, workers who earn the minimum wage won't see their salaries keep up with the cost of living would have created a two-tiered minimum wage. He said that the fact that there isn’t more support from democrats is surprising.
