A Maryland State Police helicopter crew assisted with the rescue of a woman who was injured while horseback riding Thursday in Montgomery County. The 67-year-old victim was injured after being thrown from and kicked by a horse. Maryland State Police helicopter Trooper 3, based at Frederick Municipal Airport in Frederick County, was dispatched at about 3:30 p.m. Thursday to a remote farm in Brookeville to assist with the extrication of the injured horseback rider deep into the woods. Rescue crews from Montgomery County Fire & Rescue made contact with the patient approximately 45 minutes after the 911 call. However due to the severity of the woman’s injuries and the remote location of the accident, Montgomery County Fire & Rescue requested a Trooper helicopter for an aerial rescue.
Maryland State Police pilots maneuvered the AW-139 helicopter into position 200 feet above the scene and a trooper/rescue technician was lowered. The patient was packaged in the rescue device and hoisted into the aircraft. The patient was flown to MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C., for treatment of her injuries.
This mission is an excellent example of the constant collaboration between local fire, EMS, law enforcement, technical rescue teams, and the MSP Aviation Command.
Maryland State Police Aviation provides round-the-clock coverage in Maryland for a variety of critical missions. Ten AW-139 helicopters based out of seven sections across the state provide medevac, search and rescue, aerial law enforcement and homeland security services.
