Governor Larry Hogan last week signed an executive order requiring Maryland public schools to begin after Labor Day starting next year, likely launching a political fight. Hogan, who made the announcement during a boardwalk news conference in Ocean City, emphasized that polls show overwhelming support for the idea from Marylanders. Some school systems and the state teachers union however are strongly opposed- as is Allegany County School Superintendent David Cox. The State Superintendent of Schools Karen Salmon, just two months into the job, says she hasn’t taken a position on the issue- but she leans toward local school systems making calendar decisions…
