Wife of prominent business owner, community leader passes

Barbara Jane "Barb" Smith, of Cumberland, and St. Pete Beach, Fla., passed away on Thursday.  Born in Cumberland, on Feb. 4, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Olive (Smith) and Delbert Kitzmiller. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Donald "Bill" Smith. Barb was a graduate of Allegany High School, class of 1945. She later graduated from the University of Maryland with bachelor's degrees in French and English.
In her free time, Barb enjoyed the Florida beach life, golf, tennis, skiing, bridge, and crossword puzzles. Barb is survived by her daughters, Tama S. Scarpelli and husband, Nick, and Tracy S. Smyth and husband, John; grandchildren, Leah N. Scarpelli, William Donald Corson, and Victor J. Scarpelli.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 15205 McMullen Hwy SW, Cresaptown, on Sunday, Dec. 22, 2019, from 1 to 2 p.m.
A memorial service will be conducted at the funeral home at 2 p.m. with Pastor Bob Ryan officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Cumberland YMCA, (https://www.cumberlandymca.org/donatenow.html) in Barb's honor.
