Allegany County Teachers Association Pushing For Pay Increase

May 29th, 2013 by WCBC Radio

Representatives of the Allegany County Teachers Association has been pushing for what they term a  modest increase, which would allow a modest cost of living adjustment for all employees. In order to make that happen, the county- according to the commissioners- would have to come up with an additional $1.3 million. Debbie Pappas, of the Allegany County Teacher’s Association, says there is a clear connection between the quality of teachers and the quality of education provided- and asked that the school board’s request be fully funded…

While the teachers are looking for a raise, some of the numbers suggest local teachers are doing well comparatively speaking. The average Allegany County Teacher yearly salary is $62,592- which is about $2,000 less than the state average- however it is above 16 other counties in the state.

As I state employee I pay 7% towards my pension. Teachers pay ZERO and they want more more more money. My net pay is less than it was 5 years ago due to increasing pension and health care costs, with a half year of a COLA. I think Ms Pappas should be happy with the average salary of 62,592. Then we can talk about Fair Share!
