Allegany & Garrett Only Counties With Pre-Labor Day School Start In Maryland

Allegany and Garrett county public schools are beginning the new school year this week- the only two school systems in the state doing so. In 2016, Governor Larry Hogan initiated a post-Labor Day start for schools across Maryland. However, local board of education officials did have the option of seeking a waiver due to the potential for inclement weather and lost school days. With Western Maryland usually the only area of the state hit with challenging winter conditions leading to numerous snow days- Allegany and Garrett have applied for the waivers each year. Governor Hogan says the post-Labor Day start has been well received and he sees no reason to reverse course…
