Area Officials Express Concerns With Economic Development

May 13th, 2019 by WCBC Radio

Allegany County’s economic development efforts have taken a hit in recent months with both the county commissioners and Delegate Jason Buckel expressing concerns with the seeming lack of success. Commissioners President Jake Shade said at last week’s public meeting that there appear to be no clearly defined bench marks or objectives- and Delegate Jason Buckel doubled down on that criticism during an appearance on WCBC’s “Dave Norman Show”…

Delegate Buckel will make sure that more Allegany county monies are spent on economic development and he is willing to travel to Las Vegas, Orlando, NYC, or even Paris or the Virgin Islands to pursue economic development.
    Thank you Mr.Delegate Buckel.

There is little point to the county government trying to promote economic development, especially when its leader takes until his fifth year in office to notice they haven’t done so very well. The state is anti-business and so are the local people. One need only read the comments here in recent times to sense the local hatred of employers large and small. This from folks who are often incompetent and surly to boot. The county cannot change this generations-old situation but no doubt they will hire some glib consultants from some other backwater to tell them pleasing lies.

      > Bob, on the one hand you state that this area is backward in promoting economic development and then when work is started on actual redevelopment you find fault with those people hired to actually do that work.

        > I stated that promoting economic development was pointless for this area, as would be paying someone who falsely claims they could. I also noted that one of our leaders who professes to believe that it is not pointless took a long time to notice that they were not doing so. I did not suggest that it should be done, just that its not being done seems to have come as a surprise to some.

      > Our surly demeanor may be all we have left. It seems we would be perfect for massive call centers that put people on hold, play bad music and then drop the call. Is anyone marketing that??
