Baltimore mayor resigns

May 2nd, 2019 by WCBC Radio

WBAL reports Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh resigned from office on Thursday as questions intensified into her business dealings, and as search warrants and subpoenas carried out Thursday raised the specter of a federal investigation.

The resignation was announced by her attorney, Steven Silverman, at his downtown office. Pugh did not attend, and Silverman did not take questions.

"I would like to thank you for allowing me to serve as the 50th mayor. It has been an honor and a privilege," Pugh said in a statement read by Silverman. "I am sorry for the harm that I have caused to the image of the City of Baltimore and the credibility of the office of the mayor. Baltimore deserves a mayor who can move our great city forward."

Pugh made her resignation official in a letter to Bernard C. Jack Young, the City Council president and acting mayor, who under the City Charter will assume her duties.
