BoE Should Know Later Today If They Need To Search For New Superintendent

May 8th, 2019 by WCBC Radio

Later today the Allegany County Board of Education should know whether or not a search for a new superintendent will need to get underway. Superintendent David Cox was one of three finalists who interviewed on Tuesday for the position of Sullivan County director of schools in Tennessee. Cox, the 2016 Maryland Superintendent of the Year, has been superintendent in Allegany County since 2009.  In  the second year of his third four-year contract with Allegany County- Cox tells WCBC News that he has  always wanted to return to the region where he grew up and where many of his family and friends still reside…

Best of luck to Dr. Cox.
Would there be enough room in your moving van to include 5 School Board members? They’ve done such a great job for you here in Cumberland that I’m sure you’ll want to take them with you.

With Dr. Cox leaving now perhaps the elected board will as for the MD AG to investigate the incidents at Mt. Ridge and secure a completely new HR Department and Special Education Department. Also give a look at schools that are using Title 1 teachers as “administrators” rather than teaching our most at risk students as the law requires. The financial audit, Special Education Audit, and HR expenses and potential coverups all need to happen in the post Cox era.

For the well-being of the children of the ACPS, many of us hope that his departure will happen. Tennessee’s loss will be our gain. The BOE should move quickly to bring Dr. Larry J. Smith to the ACPS as Superintendent. A man of great integrity, he is a local born educational leader who will fight day in and day out for children and families. We need a leader who will remove the vestiges of a “good old boy” system and put kids first. He will make sure that bridges are restored between the BOE, the Commissioners, state legislators, and businesses. He will make sure integrity and advocacy for all children will be constant. He will fix the bullying problem in our schools by making sure principals and teachers hold bullies accountable. He designed and implemented a school safety plan as an administrator before Columbine. I know, my kid was there. With grandkids here and the wife and I back in the county-we need to try to get Dr. Larry J. Smith here. I heard him speak a few weeks ago when he got the distinguished alumni award at FSU. Man, he has a genuine heart for kids and will fight for them to get a world-class education.
