Cardin Urges Treasury and IRS to Deliver Dependent Stimulus Payments As Soon As Possible

May 9th, 2020 by WCBC Radio

U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), a member of the Senate Finance Committee, joined colleagues in asking key questions about aggressive deadlines and delayed delivery related to the $500 Economic Impact Payment per dependent.

For example, recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Veterans Affairs (VA) benefits, Social Security, Railroad Retirement, or Social Security Disability Insurance have received little notice of the requirements necessary to receive the $500 Economic Impact Payment per dependent this year. Beneficiaries were given days’ notice to enter their information online before the April 22 and May 5 deadlines. The IRS has stated that those who missed the deadlines will have to wait until next year to collect the payment.

“To have met these timelines, eligible recipients must not only have been aware of them, but must have easy access to internet services to register for the benefits, which they often do not,” wrote the senators to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Internal Revenue Service Commissioner Charles Rettig.“[W]e are concerned that individuals receiving SSI, VA benefits, Social Security, Railroad Retirement, or Social Security Disability Insurance who do not receive their dependent payments in a timely manner will face significant hardship. Many of these individuals were already struggling prior to the COVID-19 pandemic and are even more financially strained now.”

Additionally, taxpayers who filed a 2018 or 2019 tax return and expected to receive the per-child payments have also reported that they did not receive them.

I am on SSDI and SSI and because I didn’t know which one they wanted to count me in I put in my information on the non filers tool before the first deadline I did this on April 14th. I waited for my payment and on April 29th I got a $1,200 payment on my Direct Express Card and it was missing my $500 dependent payment even though I put everything in before the deadline I went back and checked the website to make sure my dependent was on there before they accepted my information and it was on there so I don’t know why they choose not to add it and then tell me I have to wait until next year when the whole purpose of this money was to get us help in this immediate crisis. I won’t even be filing taxes next year because I’m on disability so that would mean I’d have to pay to get my taxes done just to get the money back and will miss out on the money that I need now during this pandemic crisis. I’ve heard that they are making way for people who I’m married but accidentally get their money taken for child support that the other parent owes they can get that money back for them I going to some form at the IRS and they will get their money back right away or as soon as that form is processed why do we have to wait till next year when we did everything correctly and it was their screw up and they leave us no way to even ask for them to fix it right away or as soon as possible. I’ve been searching every day online for a hopeful resolution that they see we need this money and make something happen but it seems like they just are moving on and they don’t care about the view mistakes of money we needed that they just aren’t giving us they promised us $500 for every eligible dependent but they didn’t deliver and they’re not fixing it and they’re just but telling us to wait till next year as if that’s a reasonable option. How does filing taxes I don’t need to file next year, help my family during this time of crisis & need?

Also while searching for some kind of acknowledgement and promise of fixing everyday I have found out by seeing several blogs and comments that many many other parents or people with dependents on SSI or SSDI that received their money on the same date as I did April 29th also had the same problem of missing dependent payments on that exact date oh, I really wonder what happened on the 29th of April that made all of our payments just not show up or disappear, and why is that not important enough to resolve right away when everybody is talking about how bad Americans need money to get buy right now and the IRS just says we’re not going to do anything about it sorry you can deal with it on your own next year. It’s worrisome also when talking about the next possible stimulus package that might be coming again to help us get through this time, how do I know the same thing won’t happen oh, I don’t even know what happened in the first place and nobody is investigating and nobody has said anything publicly about what happened to the money or why it was left out of my payment and so many else’s payments. The worst part is just not knowing why and then I’m not doing anything about it not even apologizing or caring too try and get the money to us right away because they messed up and left us short during a time when even that money isn’t enough but it’s a lifeline and they cut it too short and they are just leaving it that way, as if it’s not important enough to them to hold up that promise to help with our American families. They need to address this better and offer a solution immediately instead of ignoring their mistake hurting so many families.
